DIY Ombre Candles: All You Need To Know

DIY Ombre Candles are a great way to make each room of your home fill with fragrance. As the candles melt, they will subtly change scents along with the different colors.

To Get Started making your own ombre candles you will need the following:

– Jar.

– Soy Wax.

– Colored Wax Chips.

– Fragrance.

– Wick: Specific to Soy Wax.

– Thermometer.

Step#1: Get The Right Wick

Since we are specifically using soy wax then you need to make sure and get a soy wax wick. This is crucial because not all wicks will burn the wax properly. If you get the wrong wick then it will not melt the wax evenly across the whole surface. The wick will need to be cut in relation to the size of the jar that you are using. Leave an extra inch of the wick sticking up above the rim of the jar when you glue it to the bottom.

Step #2: Melt The Wax

You will need two large pans, two small pans, and a digital thermometer for this part. You will take one pan and fill it with water. You will then set another pan that is a bit smaller in size inside the bigger pan on the heat source. Then, place the melted wax chips in the smaller pan. Use the thermometer to get the wax between 120 – 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Repeat this for the other two pans as well.

Step #3: Assemble The Jars

You will want to melt enough wax for each layer to fill up your jar as you desire. First, make sure that you get the wick sized properly. Dip it in the wax and then use a clothespin to prop the wick up straight from the bottom of the jar.

Step #4: Add Fragrance

You can add either essential or fragrance oils. You should have two pans melting wax on the stove at the same time. You can add your desired strength of fragrance to each wax mixture. A good rule of thumb is to use 5 grams of oil for every 5 ounces of wax.

Step #5: Mix The Colors

You will want to pour one of the wax mixtures into your jar and let it sit until it is soft to the touch. The other wax mixture is a blend of both colors you want in the mixture. It can be called the “middle layer.” Once the bottom layer is soft to the touch, then pour the “mixed color” wax on top. This will create the illusion of a transition or blend between the colors.

Step #6: Creating the Ombre

After the mixed wax has become soft to the touch then you can pour on your top layer of wax. This should not penetrate into the layer below. So, it is important to remember that you need to keep the wax hard, but not too hard.

Step #7: The Final Step of All Steps!

The final step is crucial to get the blended look. You will want to pop the candle into the oven and heat it up to around 200 degrees. Be careful not to get it too hot. At this point, take the candle out and set it aside. You will notice that the middle layer will blend into the top and bottom layers.

Once you have finished then light it up and let the aromatic fragrance fill the room.
